Welcome to Notes from a Barstool!

Thank you for visiting the website of Guildford-based Notes from a Barstool; a new, quarterly publication that showcases short, contemporary fiction and hopes to unearth future talent. Specifically we champion Flash Fiction; a writing form that comes in at 500 words or less.

The first issue of Notes from a Barstool is scheduled for December and will be available at Ottakar's bookstore (Guildford branch), The Keystone pub, Guildford library & Woking library as well as several other Surrey venues still to be confirmed. It will also be possible to obtain the first issue of Notes from a Barstool from this website as its release date draws near.

We will shortly be accepting submissions for our second issue. Please see the submissions section for further information.

We are especially pleased to welcome onboard the Guildford branch of Ottakar's bookstore. Ottakar's have kindly agreed to act as a local distributor of the marketing issue.

The marketing issue of Notes from a Barstool features five short stories by local writers. Christine Argenti launches proceedings with The Day my Nokia Died; flash fiction which vividly captures the vacuous nature of modern relationships and mobile communication. Next up is London Calling; a story by editor Jon Beck, on a Londoner's desperation to return home. Dave Walter chooses to unsettle the mind with Mrs Gren while Nick Lane's, A Stiff one at the Bar, illustrates how one man's embarrassment is another man's laughter. Last, but by no means least, Philip Charles takes the reader to the edge in Among the Trees.

It is but a small taste of what is to come in the forthcoming launch issue of Notes from a Barstool, in what promises to be an altogether bigger, bolder and brasher celebration of writing!
