Welcome to Your Encore Season
You've spent decades becoming who everyone else needed.
This is the season where you become who you want to be.
When the lights come up after the final song, something interesting happens.
The audience starts clapping. Soon they're standing, cheering, refusing to leave.
And the performers walk back onto the stage.
Not because they have to. Because they want to give the audience one more moment to remember.
That's the encore.
The moment when the restrictions disappear. The set list is finished. The script is over. There is nothing left to prove.
What's left is pure passion..
They aren't performing out of obligation. They're performing because they love it.
I think that's exactly what this season of life can become.
For decades, many of us lived by a script.
Get the degree. Build the career. Raise the family. Pay the mortgage. Be responsible. Be needed.
We spent years carrying responsibilities and meeting expectations. Somewhere along the way, many of
us started measuring our worth by how much other people depended on us.
Then something changes.
The kids grow up. The career winds down. The calendar suddenly has empty spaces.
And for some people, that feels terrifying. They see it as the final act.
I see it as an invitation. The encore.
An encore doesn't erase everything that came before it. In fact, it only exists because of everything that came before it.
Every mistake. Every success. Every heartbreak. Every lesson.
They all earned you another trip onto the stage. Except this time, you know something your younger self didn't.
You don't have to impress anyone. You don't have to audition for a role you've already earned. You don't have to ask
permission to enjoy your own life.
This is your season of joy.
Your season of curiosity. Your season of writing your own songs.
Take the trip.
Buy the shoes.
Write the book.
Order the martini.
Or don't.
The point is that the choice belongs to you.
And here's the wonderful thing about encores. They're often what people remember most.
Not because they're technically perfect. Because they're honest. The performers relax. The audience relaxes.
For a few wonderful minutes, nobody is pretending anymore.
Maybe that's the gift of getting older.
Less pretending. Less performing for approval. More performing for yourself.
Maybe that's why I don't think of aging as winding down. I think of it as walking back onto the stage after
a lifetime of rehearsing for everyone else.
The applause isn't asking you to repeat the past. It's inviting you to enjoy what's next.
Welcome to your encore season.
The best part isn't that you've survived this long.
It's that, perhaps for the first time, you finally get to perform exactly as yourself.
What would be on your encore set list?
What is one thing you want to do, try or experience simply because it brings you joy?
